Starquest

What's the one thing any self respecting, budding director wants to do after seeing a film that inspires him? Do a sequel of course!

Starquest was our first film and attempted to continue the story started by Paul's first school film project, 'Star Raider' The original films plot was built around a surprising discovery by one young man that ordinary household toothpaste could be made into rocket fuel!

Our idea was that he had finally developed it enough to explore the galaxy (we both like star wars!) and as a human, he would find himself tested by a supreme being after crashing on a planet, to see if humans were still worthy of living. A story idea thats been done a few times before, and since.

I built a model spaceship and filmed it in Paul's parents livingroom against a blacked out window with pin holes poked in tin foil for the stars. The interior of the cockpit was Paul's bedroom with computer readouts from a commodore 64 home computer. The planet scenes were filmed at a local beach near us, Saunton Sands including the crawling out of the sea scene that was filmed on a cold October day.

This film never got finished as there were too many special effects scenes needed and a lot of puppetry for various characters we had planned and I guess it all became too much so it was shelved. The scenes that were filmed got wiped later as I needed the tapes for other projects.

It was clear that the next project needed to be smaller...
